Sleep Sacks, Swaddles & Sleep Training: Newborn-to-Toddler Sleep Guide 2026

BabyGear Team··Updated Aug 24, 2026·7 min read
TOG ratings, swaddle transitions, and sleep training methods explained. Get baby (and yourself) sleeping through the night.

Safe sleep means a bare crib, no loose bedding, and a baby on their back, full stop. Sleep sacks and swaddles let you keep baby warm without violating those rules. Pick the right TOG rating, stop swaddling at the first sign your baby is attempting to roll, and you'll dodge most early sleep regressions before they start.

When should you use a swaddle versus a sleep sack?

StageUseWhyAvg Cost
Newborn to first roll attempt (often 8-12 weeks)SwaddleCalms Moro reflex, mimics womb$15-$40
First roll attempt to 6 monthsTransitional sack (arms out)Baby may roll, arms must be free$30-$50
6-24 monthsWearable sleep sackReplaces blanket safely$25-$60
2+ yearsToddler sleep sack or blanketBaby can self-regulate$30-$80
Stop swaddling at the first sign your baby is attempting to roll. That can come as early as 8 weeks and is commonly reached by 8 to 12 weeks, so watch the baby rather than the calendar. A swaddled baby who rolls onto their stomach can't roll back, which is a suffocation risk.

TOG Ratings: How Warm Is Warm Enough?

Room TempTOG RatingBest For
74°F+ (24°C+)0.2-0.5 TOGHot summer, no AC
69-74°F (21-24°C)1.0 TOGMost year-round use
61-68°F (16-20°C)2.5 TOGWinter / cool nursery
Below 61°F3.5 TOGVery cold rooms; layer with footed PJ

Most parents buy a 1.0 TOG and a 2.5 TOG and rotate seasonally. Add a footed pajama underneath for an extra ~0.5 TOG of warmth.

You will notice there is no weighted pick here. We do not recommend one. The AAP advises against weighted swaddles, weighted sleep sacks, and weighted blankets for infant sleep, and major retailers pulled weighted infant sleepwear from their shelves in 2023 and 2024. If a room runs cold, add TOG rather than weight.

Which sleep training method should you choose?

MethodAgeHow It WorksTime to Work
Cry It Out (CIO)6+ monthsPut baby down awake, no checks3-7 days
Ferber (Check-and-Console)6+ monthsTimed checks (3, 5, 10 min) without picking up4-10 days
Chair Method6+ monthsSit in room, gradually move farther each night2-3 weeks
Pick-Up-Put-Down4+ monthsPick up if crying hard, put down when calm1-4 weeks
No-Tears (Sears)Any ageAlways respond, slowly reduce night feedsMonths
Sleep training works best after 4-6 months once baby can self-soothe. Before that, focus on a consistent bedtime routine, dark room, and white noise. Don't start during a regression, illness, or major change like daycare or moving.
We recommend no weighted sleep product. The AAP advises against weighted swaddles, weighted sleep sacks, and weighted blankets for infant sleep, and major retailers pulled weighted infant sleepwear from shelves in 2023 and 2024. An unweighted sleep sack in the right TOG for the room does the same job without the risk.
